Learn more about Matcha
What is matcha?
Matcha is a vibrant green tea powder made from finely ground green tea leaves. Unlike a regular cuppa, where you steep the leaves & take them out, with matcha you're drinking the whole leaf in powdered form. Our matcha is ceremonial grade & sourced from Japan - from our classic Pure Grade to our magical flavoured blends. 🍵
What does Matcha taste like?
Pure Grade matcha has a fresh, earthy & slightly vegetal green tea flavour. But if that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, don't worry! We've given matcha the Bird & Blend treatment with delicious flavours like Vanilla Ice Cream, Salted Caramel, fruity favourites & plenty more. There's a matcha for every Teabird!
Is Bird & Blend matcha sugar-free?
One word - yes!
Our matcha range is sugar-free, including our flavoured matchas. We use natural flavours to create our magical blends rather than loading them with sugar. That means you can enjoy all that delicious flavour & decide for yourself whether you want to add a little sweetness to your final drink.
Does matcha contain caffeine?
Matcha is made from green tea, so it naturally contains caffeine. Because you're enjoying the whole powdered tea leaf rather than simply steeping it, matcha makes a great alternative when you're looking to switch up your usual tea or coffee routine.
Matcha is also naturally high in L-theanine - an amino acid that's boosted by the shade-growing process unique to matcha cultivation. L-theanine has a calming effect on the brain. When it works alongside caffeine, it acts as a natural buffer - smoothing out the sharp stimulant hit, extending the energy curve, & bringing it down gradually rather than in a sudden crash.
The result is what matcha drinkers describe as "calm focus" - alert, clear-headed, & energised without feeling wired, anxious, or like you're waiting for the other shoe to drop.
How do I make matcha at home?
It's easier than you think!
Add ½ teaspoon of matcha to your mug or bowl, pour in a small splash of water at around 80°C, then whisk in a 'W' shape until you've got a lovely smooth, frothy matcha shot.
Top it up with hot water or your favourite milk, or pour it over ice for a refreshing iced matcha.
Easy peasy, matcha squeezy!
Want to make things even easier? Our Matcha Latte Magic Whisk heats, whisks & froths your matcha latte for you — no lumps, no drama, just matcha magic. ✨
Can I drink matcha hot or iced?
There is no wrong way to join the matcha par-tea! Enjoy it hot with water, turn it into a creamy matcha latte, pour it over ice or get adventurous with lemonade or juice.
Lots of our matcha flavours taste just as delicious hot as they do iced, so get experimenting & find your favourite.
What's the best milk for a matcha latte?
Oat milk is one of our favourites because it's creamy, gently sweet & froths brilliantly, making it a great all-rounder for matcha lattes. Coconut milk is another delicious option, especially with creamy flavours. But the best milk is the one you love — so dairy or plant-based, get experimenting!
Which matcha should I try first?
New to the magical world of matcha? Pure Grade is perfect if you love that classic earthy green tea flavour. Fancy something a little sweeter or more playful? Try one of our flavoured matchas instead. Or, if choosing just one sounds impossible, our Matcha Selection Box lets you sip your way through 12 different blends & discover your perfect matcha.
